In our town of Heidel\u00adberg, friendly emis\u00ads\u00ada\u00adries from the city regu\u00adlarly show up at the door asking about puddles and pools in the garden. The idea is to find the bree\u00adding grounds of larvae of the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albo\u00adpictus) \u2014 because the bite of the tiger mosquito is not only unplea\u00adsant, but can also bring dange\u00adrous infec\u00adtious dise\u00adases. The Asian tiger mosquito origi\u00adnally comes from Southeast Asia, and in Germany it feels parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly at home in Bavaria and Baden-W\u00fcrt\u00adtem\u00adberg. The small, unfort\u00adu\u00adna\u00adtely very stinging pests transmit about 20 patho\u00adgens, inclu\u00adding tropical dise\u00adases such as dengue or chikun\u00adgunya fever. So far, there have been no known cases of trans\u00admis\u00adsion of these dise\u00adases in Germany, but as tempe\u00adra\u00adtures rise, they are beco\u00adming more and more likely. How can we combat the striped blood\u00adsu\u00adckers?<\/strong> Contai\u00adners such as rain barrels, trivets or wate\u00adring cans can easily be rendered useless as bree\u00adding grounds by cove\u00adring them or emptying them regu\u00adlarly. A profes\u00adsional control measure is to apply a biolo\u00adgical protein agent (BTI) to the bree\u00adding waters, which kills mosquito larvae but does not harm all other animals and plants or humans. Once tiger mosqui\u00adtoes are on the move, the risk of biting can be reduced through a variety of measures: Fly screens prevent them from ente\u00adring the house, and the smell of sweat, which attracts the insects, can be coun\u00adter\u00adacted by regular showers. In addi\u00adtion, it helps to avoid strongly scented shower gels, perfumes, or cosme\u00adtics. Body cove\u00adring with clot\u00adhing also makes it harder for mosqui\u00adtoes to bite.
