Do you know how much micro\u00adpla\u00adstic we ingest on average every day? A study by Cornell Univer\u00adsity reveals this for people in 109 count\u00adries. The figures are indeed shocking: Indo\u00adne\u00adsians consume around 15 grams of micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics per month \u2014 a global record. Ameri\u00adcans consume around 2.4 grams, while Para\u00adguay has the lowest figure at 0.85 grams. When it comes to inha\u00adling micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics, China and Mongolia lead the way with over 2.8 million particles per month. In the USA, the figure is around 300,000 particles.<\/p>\n

It is still not comple\u00adtely clear how these micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics could affect our health. However, micro\u00adpla\u00adstic particles can enter the blood\u00adstream and accu\u00admu\u00adlate in various organs. Chronic dise\u00adases, inflamm\u00ada\u00adtion and other health problems are possible as a result.<\/p>\n

So let\u2019s all hope that the UN Plas\u00adtics Conven\u00adtion<\/a> planned for the end of 2024 is a success. Even the study empha\u00adsises that micro\u00adpla\u00adstic expo\u00adsure can only be reduced through inter\u00adna\u00adtional cooperation.<\/p>\n

By the way: Accor\u00adding to the EU, the main sources of micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics<\/a> are the washing of synthetic clot\u00adhing (35 per cent of primary micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics) and tyre abra\u00adsion from driving (28 per cent).<\/p>\n
