The trusty old wrist\u00adwatch has served its time for&nbsp;many.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s actually really great when our weara\u00adbles remind us that it\u2019s time for a bit of exer\u00adcise or a glass of water. Or when the heart rate monitor prevents us from over\u00adex\u00ader\u00adting ourselves. This is not a hobby for health fana\u00adtics: doctors are also convinced that weara\u00adbles will become incre\u00adasingly important in cardio\u00adlogy, for example.<\/p>\n<p>However, as is so often the case, there are also down\u00adsides, as weara\u00adbles can also encou\u00adrage unde\u00adsi\u00adrable tenden\u00adcies. A recent study in the <i>Journal of the American Heart Asso\u00adcia\u00adtion<\/i> indi\u00adcates that pati\u00adents with atrial fibril\u00adla\u00adtion who wear weara\u00adbles often react with strong anxiety and fear to noti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtions about arrhyth\u00admias. And people who already tend to constantly monitor or opti\u00admize them\u00adselves can develop a certain depen\u00addency. Further\u00admore, there is no manda\u00adtory quality control for the devices available on the market. This means there is a risk of measu\u00adre\u00adment errors and inap\u00adpro\u00adpriate medical recom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtions. Last but not least, weara\u00adbles collect a lot of personal data, which is a cause for concern in terms of data protec\u00adtion and data security.<\/p>\n<p>The enormous possi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adties of data coll\u00adec\u00adtion and moni\u00adto\u00adring offer great oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties, but also certain risks.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, doctors will have to be prepared not only to discuss health infor\u00adma\u00adtion found via Google, but also to discuss their pati\u00adents\u2019 nocturnal blood oxygen levels\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So what do you wear on your wrist?
