The Body Mass Index (BMI) has a new chal\u00adlenger: the Body Round\u00adness Index (BRI). The disad\u00advan\u00adtage of the BMI is that it only relates weight to height. It is ther\u00ade\u00adfore unsui\u00adtable for muscular people, because muscles weigh more than fat. Accor\u00adding to their BMI of 30 and more, both Arnold Schwar\u00adzen\u00adegger and Dwayne \u2018The Rock\u2019 Johnson would clearly be over\u00adweight or obese.<\/p>\n

The BRI provides a measure for asses\u00adsing body shape and health risk based on height and waist circum\u00adfe\u00adrence. It aims to measure the round\u00adness of the body and provides a more accu\u00adrate assess\u00adment of fat distri\u00adbu\u00adtion. A higher BRI indi\u00adcates a rounder body shape and a higher risk of cardio\u00advas\u00adcular disease \u2013 a recent publi\u00adca\u00adtion<\/a> high\u00adlights it as a parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly good indi\u00adcator of health risks. However, it is actually based on an article<\/a> that was published in 2013.<\/p>\n

Other BMI alter\u00adna\u00adtives such as WHR (waist-to-hip ratio) and WtHR (waist-to-height ratio) are already poin\u00adting in the same direc\u00adtion. However, BRI is a more advanced index that takes into account overall body round\u00adness. And WHR and WtHR have not yet received any truly resounding recognition.<\/p>\n

It is to be feared that the BRI will not lead to a better under\u00adstan\u00adding, at least for \u2018normal people\u2019. We once tried out calcu\u00adla\u00adtors on the websites of health insu\u00adrance compa\u00adnies and received the follo\u00adwing health infor\u00adma\u00adtion for a presu\u00admably average Anna Muster\u00adfrau (1.65 metres tall, 46 years old, 69 kilo\u00adgrams, size 42 \u2013 here waist size 78\/hip size 102 cm):<\/p>\n

BMI:<\/b> You have a BMI of 25.34. You are slightly to modera\u00adtely overweight.<\/i>
\nWtHR:<\/b> Your Waist-to-Height Ratio: 0.47. Great, your weight is within the normal range.<\/i> With two more years of life (48), however, the result is: You are under\u00adweight and should not lose any more weight.<\/i>
\nWHR:<\/b> Your WHR value is: 0.76. Your risk of coro\u00adnary heart disease is 2.32x higher.<\/i>
