Have you ever wondered why Santa Claus chooses to harness reindeer to his sleigh? The answer takes us back to 1823, when the English poet Clement Clarke Moore wrote his famous poem \u2018A Visit from St. Nicholas\u2019<\/a> \u2013 later, it was even trans\u00adlated by Erich K\u00e4stner<\/a>. And let\u2019s be honest: the choice is a great one \u2013 reindeer are fasci\u00adna\u00adting animals!<\/p>\n

Reindeer have an amazing ability to cope with the stress and hustle and bustle that are ubiqui\u00adtous at Christmas time: they can eat, digest and rest at the same time.<\/a> Zurich rese\u00adar\u00adchers have disco\u00advered that reindeer fall into a kind of resting sleep while eating \u2013 a clever stra\u00adtegy for saving energy and time.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not all. Reindeer have another impres\u00adsive feature: they can see UV light<\/a>. In their Arctic home, where snow and ice reflect sunlight inten\u00adsely, this ability gives them a decisive advan\u00adtage. It not only helps them to detect preda\u00adtors more quickly, but also to locate food such as lichen, their most important source of nutri\u00adtion, more easily. UV light makes lichen stand out against the white snow, enab\u00adling the animals to search for food more efficiently.<\/p>\n

Another related feature, and a parti\u00adcular high\u00adlight, is their unique eye adapt\u00ada\u00adtion. The colour of reindeer eyes<\/a> changes with the seasons! In summer, their eyes shimmer golden yellow, while in winter, during the dark polar night, they take on a deep blue colour. They owe this colour change to a layer in the eye, known as the tapetum lucidum<\/a>. This layer reflects light back through the retina, incre\u00adasing light sensi\u00adti\u00advity. In winter, this layer becomes denser, crea\u00adting the blue colour and incre\u00adasing UV sensi\u00adti\u00advity. In summer, on the other hand, the golden eye colour protects the animals from over\u00adex\u00adci\u00adte\u00adment caused by strong sunlight.<\/p>\n

Inci\u00adden\u00adtally, reindeer are also important for climate protec\u00adtion<\/a>. By compac\u00adting the snow cover through their grazing, they help to keep the under\u00adlying perma\u00adfrost cool. This prevents the release of huge amounts of green\u00adhouse gases that could further fuel climate change. Without reindeer, the conse\u00adquences of climate change in the Arctic regions would probably be even more dramatic.<\/p>\n

With all these impres\u00adsive abili\u00adties, reindeer have more than earned a place in the spot\u00adlight of the Christmas season (and a very special entry in the Alaska Depart\u00adment of Fish and Game<\/a>).
