These particles are either created by the disin\u00adte\u00adgra\u00adtion of larger plastic objects (secon\u00addary micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics) or are deli\u00adbera\u00adtely manu\u00adfac\u00adtured for products such as cosme\u00adtics (primary micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics). The spread of micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics and its poten\u00adtial effects on humans and the envi\u00adron\u00adment are the subject of nume\u00adrous studies, some of which are curr\u00adently again deli\u00adve\u00adring worrying results. Just a few months ago, this was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pk-pharmakommunikation.de\/en\/blog\/how-microplastics-are-threatening-our-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subject of our blog<\/a>. In the mean\u00adtime, various new rese\u00adarch results have emerged that make the topic seem incre\u00adasingly urgent:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics in the human&nbsp;brain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A US rese\u00adarch team found signi\u00adfi\u00adcantly more nano- and micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics in the liver and brain of deceased people examined in 2024 than in samples taken in 2016. The levels were parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly high in the brain \u2013 up to 30 times higher than in the liver or kidneys. The most commonly found micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics were made of poly\u00adethy\u00adlene, which is used for films and bottles. The conta\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion was parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly high in twelve brain samples from 2019 to 2024 from people with a confirmed diagnosis of dementia: they contained between 12,000 and 48,000 micro\u00adgrams of plastic per gram of tissue. However, the rese\u00adarch group empha\u00adsises that their study does not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Nihart, AJ et al. Nat Med&nbsp;2025.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41591-024-03453-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41591-024\u201303453\u20111<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Kidney damage caused by microplastics<\/p>\n<p>A study in Commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtions Biology has examined how micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics combined with benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) can damage the kidneys of mice. BaP is a poly\u00adcy\u00adclic aromatic hydro\u00adcarbon (PAH) that is carci\u00adno\u00adgenic, can alter genetic mate\u00adrial and has proper\u00adties that are toxic to repro\u00adduc\u00adtion. In animals that consumed both micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics and BaP in their drin\u00adking water, there was a disrup\u00adtion of fat meta\u00adbo\u00adlism in the kidneys and a specific type of cell death (ferrop\u00adtosis). However, the actual damage probably did not occur directly in the kidneys, but rather through damage to the intestines, which made the intestinal wall more permeable. This caused harmful subs\u00adtances to enter the blood\u00adstream from the intestines and thus to the kidneys. Micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics served as a carrier for BaP into the body. Commun Biol 8, 211,&nbsp;2025.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s42003-025-07641-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s42003-025\u201307641\u20118<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics and neuro\u00adlo\u00adgical impair\u00adment in&nbsp;mice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another study from January 2025 examined the effects of micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics on the brains of mice. The results showed that micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics can poten\u00adti\u00adally clog blood vessels in the brains of mice. The affected mice moved less, had poorer orien\u00adta\u00adtion and less stamina. However, the results cannot be easily trans\u00adferred from mice to humans due to diffe\u00adrences in brain struc\u00adture, the study authors wrote in the journal Science Advances.<\/p>\n<p>Haipeng Huang et al.
