Rese\u00adar\u00adchers inves\u00adti\u00adgated the role of tyre and brake wear in the gene\u00adra\u00adtion of urban parti\u00adcu\u00adlate matter. Anyone who lives or walks along a busy road brea\u00adthes in a signi\u00adfi\u00adcant amount of micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics. \u2018In Hamburg, an average of 12 percent of the particles in the air on main roads come from tyre and brake wear, most of which is micro\u00adpla\u00adstic,\u2019 explains Mailin Samland, lead author of the study and PhD student in meteo\u00adro\u00adlogy at the Centre for Earth System Rese\u00adarch and Sustaina\u00adbi\u00adlity (CEN) at the Univer\u00adsity of Hamburg. The orga\u00adni\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adon\u2019s conclu\u00adsion: So far, there is no evidence that micro\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics in drin\u00adking water are harmful. There is ample evidence that the particles simply pass through the diges\u00adtive tract and are then excreted. However, the study is still too limited to rule out all risks. Rese\u00adar\u00adchers expect up to 1,200 million tonnes of plastic in the sea, with a peak of 23 million tonnes per year by 2045.
