For example, when it comes to the medical use of urine, one can find remar\u00adkably specific instructions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Against tooth\u00adache and cavi\u00adties: <em>\u201cRinse your mouth with fresh morning urine for at least three minutes and keep it in the oral cavity as long as possible.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>For middle ear infec\u00adtions: <em>\u201cLet urine run into the ear canal and leave it there for 15 minutes.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>For skin impu\u00adri\u00adties or minor burns: <em>\u201cIn the morning, after your normal facial clean\u00adsing, wash your face with concen\u00adtrated morning urine and do not rinse it off for as long as possible.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Behind such recom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtions lies a surpri\u00adsingly persis\u00adtent myth: urine is a natural disin\u00adfec\u00adtant. In fact, it was already used for this purpose in ancient and medieval medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Over\u00adco\u00adming the disgust \u2014 is it worth&nbsp;it?<\/p>\n<p>The idea that urine is sterile is now considered outdated. Modern micro\u00adbio\u00adlo\u00adgical studies show that the human urinary tract does indeed have a bacte\u00adrial colo\u00adniza\u00adtion. The supposed anti\u00adseptic thus turns out to be simply a bodily fluid which\u2014like many others\u2014can contain micro\u00ador\u00adga\u00adnisms and ther\u00ade\u00adfore has little place near wounds.<\/p>\n<p>In addi\u00adtion, urine consists mostly of water, along with a small percen\u00adtage of elec\u00adtro\u00adlytes and meta\u00adbolic waste products that the body is actively trying to elimi\u00adnate. There is no convin\u00adcing mecha\u00adnism for an anti\u00adseptic effect.<\/p>\n<p>If it burns, it must work against bacteria?<\/p>\n<p>The fact that urine can sting on injured skin is some\u00adtimes inter\u00adpreted as evidence of a \u201cdisin\u00adfec\u00adting effect.\u201d In reality, this is more likely due to its salt concen\u00adtra\u00adtion and slightly acidic pH.<\/p>\n<p>In short: urine can sting\u2014but not for the same reasons as an anti\u00adseptic, rather for roughly the same reasons as salt\u00adwater on an abrasion.<\/p>\n<p>No \u2014 urine is not a disinfectant<\/p>\n<p>Today, we have clean water, simple wound care, and sterile dres\u00adsings.
