But right where many tradi\u00adtional fasting regi\u00admens aim to be parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly thorough, problems arise: in so-called colon cleansing.<\/p>\n<p>Bear in mind: The gut is not a drain\u00adpipe, but an ecosystem. And anyone who \u201ccleanses\u201d this ecosystem with Glauber\u2019s salt, Epsom salt, enemas, or colon hydro\u00adthe\u00adrapy isn\u2019t just getting rid of supposed waste\u2014they\u2019re also disrupting the micro\u00adbial infra\u00adstruc\u00adture that\u2019s essen\u00adtial for health, immune modu\u00adla\u00adtion, and metabolism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Unde\u00adre\u00adsti\u00admated Player in Metabolism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Short-chain fatty acids, vitamins, anti\u00adoxi\u00addants, and anti-inflamm\u00ada\u00adtory substances\u2014the intestinal micro\u00adbiome produces all of these. Buty\u00adrate, in parti\u00adcular, is considered a meta\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adcally inte\u00adres\u00adting candi\u00addate: it stabi\u00adlizes the intestinal barrier, has anti-inflamm\u00ada\u00adtory effects, and is asso\u00adciated with bene\u00adfi\u00adcial effects on body weight.<\/p>\n<p>A diverse micro\u00adbiome is thus not merely a deco\u00adra\u00adtive acces\u00adsory to a healthy diet, but an important func\u00adtional player. Fasting can have a bene\u00adfi\u00adcial effect on the micro\u00adbiome. Studies suggest that inter\u00admit\u00adtent fasting and fasting periods lasting several days can increase micro\u00adbial diver\u00adsity and promote bene\u00adfi\u00adcial bacteria. However, what happens during the eating windows is crucial: Combi\u00adning inter\u00admit\u00adtent fasting with a low-fiber diet quickly under\u00admines the concept.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Colon Clean\u00adsing: An Old Tradi\u00adtion, a Newly Reco\u00adgnized Problem<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many classic fasting proto\u00adcols are from a time when the micro\u00adbiome was not considered scien\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adcally signi\u00adfi\u00adcant. Nowa\u00addays, some aspects of these proto\u00adcols seem outdated. A study on the ten-day Buch\u00adinger fasting regimen\u2014which tradi\u00adtio\u00adnally begins with a bowel cleansing\u2014shows where this can lead: pro-inflamm\u00ada\u00adtory prote\u00adob\u00adac\u00adteria increased, while important fiber-meta\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adzing bacteria such as Rumi\u00adno\u00adcoc\u00adcaceae decreased, an effect that only returns to normal after about three months (<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6861737\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mesnage et al. 2019<\/a>). Since fasting and bowel clean\u00adsing are inex\u00adtri\u00adcably linked in the Buch\u00adinger protocol, the study leaves open which of the two factors was actually the driving force\u2014one more reason to at least skip the bowel clean\u00adsing as a precau\u00adtion. A bowel cleanse isn\u2019t effec\u00adtive as a \u201cdetox\u201d anyway: deto\u00adxi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion is the job of the liver, the kidneys\u2014and also an intact microbiome.<\/p>\n<p>A large British biobank analysis invol\u00adving over 500,000 parti\u00adci\u00adpants suggests that this is not only unplea\u00adsant in the short term but may also have long-term impli\u00adca\u00adtions: Those who regu\u00adlarly took osmotic laxa\u00adtives such as Glauber\u2019s salt or Epsom salt had a signi\u00adfi\u00adcantly increased risk of dementia (<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10115504\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yang et al. 2023, Neuro\u00adlogy<\/a>). Whether the laxa\u00adtives are the direct cause remains unclear\u2014but it\u2019s one more reason not to volun\u00adt\u00ada\u00adrily subject your gut to this procedure.<\/p>\n<p>In prac\u00adtical terms, this means: fasting, yes; \u201cslash-and-burn,\u201d no. More sensible approa\u00adches include plant-based eating windows, prebiotic fiber, probio\u00adtics, and\u2014contrary to old fasting folklore\u2014coffee.In a large Dutch cohort study conducted by the Univer\u00adsity of Groningen, coffee\u2014along with wine and tea\u2014was among the bever\u00adages that most strongly promoted the diver\u00adsity of gut bacteria (<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5240844\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zher\u00adna\u00adkova et al. 2016, Science<\/a>).
