AI detec\u00adtors: Who wrote it?"},"content":{"rendered":"

What do we make of a minister having their speech written by an AI? This ques\u00adtion was the subject of heated debate only recently. However, top poli\u00adti\u00adcians don\u2019t write their own spee\u00adches anyway. So does it really make a signi\u00adfi\u00adcant diffe\u00adrence whether a human speech\u00adwriter or ChatGPT wielded the pen or tapped away at the keyboard?<\/p>\n

Almost at the same time, the lite\u00adrary world was grap\u00adpling with a similar ques\u00adtion: the horror novel Shy Girl<\/em> came under suspi\u00adcion of having been partly created with the help of arti\u00adfi\u00adcial intel\u00adli\u00adgence. Readers analysed passages of text, discussed \u2018typical AI patterns\u2019 and employed AI detec\u00adtors. Ulti\u00adm\u00adately, the publisher with\u00addrew the book.<\/p>\n

Similar ques\u00adtions underlie both cases. Is it even possible to reliably deter\u00admine whether a text was produced by AI? And, more funda\u00admen\u00adtally: is it equally important for every text to know who or what wrote it?<\/p>\n

As for the first ques\u00adtion, various AI detec\u00adtors at least promise an answer. But this is precisely where the problem begins. Now a \u2018black box\u2019 \u2013 the AI detector \u2013 is supposed to iden\u00adtify the traces left in a text by another \u2018black box\u2019 such as ChatGPT or Claude.<\/p>\n

A digital lottery of opinions rather than defi\u00adni\u00adtive proof<\/strong><\/p>\n

AI detec\u00adtors that promise to iden\u00adtify machine-gene\u00adrated texts are already being used by schools, univer\u00adsi\u00adties, publishers and busi\u00adnesses. In prac\u00adtice, however, their judge\u00adments are often alar\u00admingly contra\u00addic\u00adtory. If you run the same text through several detec\u00adtors, it is not uncommon to receive comple\u00adtely diffe\u00adrent assessments.<\/p>\n

We have tested various popular detec\u00adtors on diffe\u00adrent types of text. Of course, this is not a scien\u00adtific study. However, this small prac\u00adtical test illus\u00adtrates very clearly just how cautiously one should treat the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

These results clearly illus\u00adtrate why repu\u00adtable articles that refer to the findings of AI detec\u00adtors always phrase their conclu\u00adsions with caution. A medical text written enti\u00adrely by a human was clas\u00adsi\u00adfied by one tool as having a 93 per cent proba\u00adbi\u00adlity of being AI-gene\u00adrated. At the same time, song lyrics created enti\u00adrely by ChatGPT were deemed predo\u00admi\u00adnantly or enti\u00adrely human-written by all three detec\u00adtors tested.<\/p>\n

It becomes comple\u00adtely absurd when someone tries to conceal the use of AI by using AI itself: so-called \u2018huma\u00adnisers\u2019 are desi\u00adgned to rephrase AI texts so that they appear more human and are no longer detected by the tools. In our expe\u00adri\u00adment, however, the result was by no means more reliable. In some cases, the detec\u00adtors even clas\u00adsi\u00adfied the edited text as AI-gene\u00adrated more frequently.<\/p>\n

At this point, at the very latest, the ques\u00adtion arises as to whether the effort involved isn\u2019t greater than simply editing the text carefully oneself from the outset.<\/p>\n

Not every use of AI should be judged in the same way<\/strong><\/p>\n

But should every use of AI be viewed as funda\u00admen\u00adtally negative?<\/p>\n

In a novel, readers expect not only a plot but also an indi\u00advi\u00addual voice, crea\u00adti\u00advity and the author\u2019s personal choices. The person behind the novel is, in a sense, part of the product.<\/p>\n

Conse\u00adquently, reac\u00adtions are parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly sensi\u00adtive when\u00adever there is a suspi\u00adcion that AI might be behind large sections of a lite\u00adrary text.<\/p>\n

In the case of poli\u00adtical spee\u00adches, the situa\u00adtion is more compli\u00adcated. It is nothing new that leading poli\u00adti\u00adcians often do not write their own spee\u00adches. Nevert\u00adheless, a speech should convey the speaker\u2019s stance, posi\u00adtion and perso\u00adna\u00adlity. The crucial ques\u00adtion is ther\u00ade\u00adfore not so much who formu\u00adlated each indi\u00advi\u00addual sentence. What is more important is whether the speaker stands by the content and takes respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adlity for what is said. And when it comes to comme\u00admo\u00adra\u00adtive spee\u00adches, most people would probably find the words of an AI out of place.<\/p>\n

Schools and univer\u00adsi\u00adties face a diffe\u00adrent problem. If a written assign\u00adment is speci\u00adfi\u00adcally intended to assess a student\u2019s inde\u00adpen\u00addent ability to rese\u00adarch, struc\u00adture and formu\u00adlate ideas, AI support alters the assess\u00adment outcome. This gives rise to far-reaching problems.<\/p>\n

With many non-fiction texts, however, the focus lies else\u00adwhere. A medical back\u00adground article, a press release or a user manual should, above all, be factually correct, compre\u00adhen\u00adsible and precise.<\/p>\n

Here, AI can certainly be a helpful tool: in struc\u00adtu\u00adring infor\u00adma\u00adtion, in trans\u00adla\u00adtions, summa\u00adries, suggested headings or formal checks. Many writers are likely to have been using such tools as aids for some time now.<\/p>\n

The crucial factor is who takes responsibility<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, this is precisely where problems arise if AI-gene\u00adrated results are actually adopted without being checked. The poten\u00adtial for AI to gene\u00adrate errors or \u2018hallu\u00adci\u00adn\u00ada\u00adtions\u2019 and present them with the utmost convic\u00adtion is almost limitless.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, it comes down to profes\u00adsional over\u00adsight. What matters is who takes respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adlity for the result. There is no doubt that AI can support rese\u00adarch, struc\u00adtu\u00adring and text editing. However, it cannot replace specia\u00adlist know\u00adledge, expe\u00adri\u00adence, critical thin\u00adking and careful quality control.<\/p>\n
