Yesterday, you left the water bottle in the car. It was still quite cool this morning, but now the sun is beating down on the car. You\u2019re still thirsty, though. So: should you unscrew the cap and drink \u2013 or is it better to get a new bottle?<\/p>\n

Rese\u00adar\u00adchers at the Univer\u00adsity of Nebraska have inves\u00adti\u00adgated how typical ever\u00adyday condi\u00adtions affect water in single-use poly\u00adethy\u00adlene tere\u00adphtha\u00adlate (PET) bottles. To do this, they tested eight popular US brands and subjected the bottles to, amongst other things, high tempe\u00adra\u00adtures, move\u00adment and repeated tempe\u00adra\u00adture changes.\u00b9<\/p>\n

When heat meets movement<\/strong><\/p>\n

When heat and move\u00adment occur toge\u00adther, the effect is grea\u00adtest. When shaken at a tempe\u00adra\u00adture of 60 \u00b0C, the concen\u00adtra\u00adtion of nano\u00adpla\u00adstic particles in the water rose to more than nine times the initial level. The amount of micro\u00adpla\u00adstic particles also increased. However, it is not just heat that has an impact \u2013 in general, repeated tempe\u00adra\u00adture fluc\u00adtua\u00adtions over a period of 15 days led to an increased release of nanoplastics.<\/p>\n

The plastic particles appar\u00adently did not origi\u00adnate solely from the PET of the bottle itself. The rese\u00adar\u00adchers also found evidence of other plas\u00adtics, which may have come from the cap, for example.<\/p>\n

Better to go thirsty than to drink?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Does this mean that, as a general rule, you should always pour away water from a PET bottle that has been left in a car for a long time? It\u2019s not quite that clear-cut. Micro- and nano\u00adpla\u00ads\u00adtics can now be detected in many food\u00ads\u00adtuffs and also in the human body. However, it is not yet suffi\u00adci\u00adently clear at what quan\u00adti\u00adties they actually pose a health risk.<\/p>\n

Nevert\u00adheless, the advice is: store single-use PET bottles in a cool place and protect them from direct sunlight. A car is not a parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly good place for this \u2013 neither on hot summer\u2019s days nor for extended periods when tempe\u00adra\u00adtures fluc\u00adtuate. If you\u2019ve left a bottle in the car once, you don\u2019t auto\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcally have to throw it in the bin. However, you might want to recon\u00adsider keeping a perma\u00adnent supply of water stored in the car.<\/p>\n
