The title of the original English publi\u00adca\u00adtion \u201cCure: A Journey into the Science of Mind over Body\u201d does not contain the word \u201cscience\u201d for nothing. The title, blurb and cover of the German edition, on the other hand, lead buyers down a false path by giving the book an esoteric guise \u2014 that defi\u00adni\u00adtely does not reflect the content. Even if readers do get some advice here and there on how to take their health into their own hands, this is over\u00adwhel\u00admingly a scien\u00adtific nonfic\u00adtion book.<\/p>\n
Jo Marchant, an English science jour\u00adna\u00adlist with a docto\u00adrate in micro\u00adbio\u00adlogy and a former editor at \u201cNature,\u201d shines with exten\u00adsive rese\u00adarch and clean evidence as well as cita\u00adtions. The book provides a compre\u00adhen\u00adsive over\u00adview of those pheno\u00admena where the psyche some\u00adtimes influences the body in pheno\u00admenal ways. The author thus repea\u00adtedly pleads for a more open approach to methods of alter\u00adna\u00adtive medi\u00adcine: \u201cWe don\u2019t have to deny scien\u00adtific findings and logical thin\u00adking (\u2026) in order to benefit from the healing proper\u00adties of the psyche.\u201d<\/p>\n
The bottom line is that, despite some weak\u00adne\u00adsses, this impres\u00adsive work is an inte\u00adres\u00adting, well-rese\u00adar\u00adched contri\u00adbu\u00adtion to a field that is prac\u00adti\u00adcally flooded with esote\u00adri\u00adcally inclined publi\u00adca\u00adtions. It would be a pity if the book simply drowned in this swamp.<\/p>\n
